How football AGents (should) identify players clubs want

What is the point of mandates in football?

How Football Agents (SHOULD) Identify Players Clubs Actually Want

The reality is a clubs requirements creates the demands in the market. A player’s availability is worthless unless a club is interested in signing a player. For many players and new football agents this is a hard reality to understand..

A football agent’s role isn’t just about finding talented players—it’s about identifying marketable assets that clubs are willing to invest in. Analysing a player requires a mix of scouting, data analysis, and market research. Here’s how agents should evaluate players beyond just ability.

YES IT’S THE 4 CORNERS! It’s not perfect but it’s a very useful tool to assess players…

1. TECHNICAL ABILITY

Assess key player skills like passing accuracy, dribbling success rate, shooting efficiency, and ball retention under pressure.
Using data from platforms like WyScout, InStat, or Opta to compare technical performance with similar players in the market.

PLEASE!!! Video analysis need to go beyond highlights—watch full match footage to see how they perform in different situations.

If you get the chance and budget/time allows watch the player LIVE. The journey is everything…

2. TACTICAL INTELLIGENCE

Does the player understand different formations and adapt to in-game situations?

Check heatmaps and movement patterns to evaluate positioning, pressing ability, and off-ball intelligence. If you’re not strong is this area align yourself with an analyst who an provide you with the necessary guidance.

Consider how they fit into the style of play of clubs looking for players in their position.

3. PHYSICAL PROFILE

Analyse speed, acceleration, stamina, agility, and strength—key factors in whether a player can compete at a higher level. Or play in a particular league. This is where you’ll need to understand the football markets that you’re planning on working in.

Injury records are critical. Does the player have recurring fitness issues? How do they recover from injuries?

Compare physical stats with league averages to assess how they will cope with more intense competition.

4. PSYCHOLOGICAL STRENGTH

A player’s mentality can be the difference between success and failure. How do they handle pressure? Are they disciplined?

Look at past performances in high-pressure games. Do they step up or fade away?

Leadership qualities, work ethic, and ability to handle setbacks are key traits for long-term success.

5. PERFORMANCE DATA & CONSISTENCY
A player’s stats need context. Do they perform against top opposition or just weaker teams?

Compare their goals, assists, passing accuracy, and defensive stats over multiple seasons.

I’m not a fan but clubs use these metrics. Use Expected Goals (xG), Expected Assists (xA), and defensive metrics like interceptions and duel win percentage to measure impact.

The second part of this article is key for football agents.

The 4 corners are the foundation of evaluating a player. It takes time, research, and patience. There are no instant answers when deciding if a player is worth representing.

Successful agents look beyond the obvious. They see opportunities others miss and pitch players in a way that makes clubs take notice.

It’s a skill—develop it.

Take your time and develop a strategy before you decide to promote a client to a team.

6. VERSATILITY & ADAPTABILITY

Can the player play multiple positions or roles? A winger who can also play as a second striker or a full-back who can operate as a wing-back has more value.
Agents should analyse how adaptable a player is to different tactical systems and leagues.

7. INJURY RECORD & LONGEVITY

Clubs are reluctant to invest in injury-prone players. Frequent muscle injuries or knee problems can be a red flag.
Consider a player’s playing minutes per season—are they consistently available?
Look at how they recover from setbacks and whether they have a strong fitness routine.

8. MARKETABILITY & DEMAND

A player’s value isn’t just about ability—it’s about demand. Are clubs actively looking for players in their position?

Social media presence matters. Players with strong fan engagement and sponsorship appeal attract more interest.

Nationality and league exposure also play a role. A player from a country with strong football investment (e.g., Brazil, England, USA) may have a bigger commercial pull.

Does the player have an appealing playing style? Flair players, goal scorers, and dynamic wingers are easier to market.

9. PATHWAY, BUDGET & MARKET EXPECTATIONS

What’s the realistic next step for the player? Can they move from a mid-table club to a Champions League side, or do they need an intermediate step?

Budget matters—how much are clubs willing to pay for players of similar quality? Overpricing can kill a deal.

Agents should assess whether a player is worth the salary they expect. If their demands are too high compared to their market value, it will be difficult to place them.

10. CONTRACT SITUATION & TIMING

Transfer opportunities often depend on contract details. How long is left on their current deal? Is there a release clause?
Players with expiring contracts or low buyout clauses are easier to move.
Timing is key—agents must place their players in the market when clubs are actively looking and have the budget to invest.

BEST PRACTICE WINS

The best advice I can give to a new football agent is to remember your role. Is your role to discover potential talent. NO. Football agents don’t just sign talented players; they sign assets with market value.

Signing a player as a client is one thing, but ensuring they are in demand, marketable, and fit for the next step is what separates top agents from the rest.
