How Much Does a Football Agent Earn?
It depends on who you work with, how good you are, and where you’re based.
There’s no fixed salary. You earn from commissions, fees, and deals.
What do agents actually earn?
-
Top agents working with Premier League or international stars can make millions per year.
Example: Jorge Mendes reportedly earned over £100 million in commissions from one summer transfer window. -
Mid-level agents working with Championship or top-level European pros can earn £100k–£500k a year, depending on how many players they manage and how active the transfer market is.
-
New agents working with semi-pro or youth players may earn £0 to £30k in the first couple of years while building contacts and clients.
Where does the money come from?
-
Player contract negotiation: Agents typically earn between 3% and 5% of the player’s salary. (FIFA rules on service fee caps are currently suspended). Some football agents get up to 10% if both club and player agree.
-
Transfer deals: Agents may also be paid by the buying club — especially in big money transfers. A football agent can typically earn up to 10% of any transfer fee.
-
Sponsorship/commercial deals: These can bring in extra income but are harder to secure unless your player is already marketable. Football Agents typically earn between 10% to 20% on sponsorship and endorsement deals.
Example earnings:
-
If your player signs a £1m/year deal, and you’re earning 5%, you make £50,000 per year on that one contract.
-
If you have 3 players on similar deals, that’s £150,000/year — before tax and expenses.
What can affect your income?
-
Number of clients
-
Level they play at
-
Timing of transfers and renewals
-
Your negotiation skills
-
Reputation and network
Costs you’ll need to factor in:
-
Licensing fees (e.g. FIFA exam, yearly license)
-
Legal advice and accounting
-
Travel to games and meetings
-
Marketing, branding, and websites
-
Paying scouts or partners who help you identify players
What’s the real picture?
Most new agents won’t earn much in the first year or two. It takes time to sign players, build trust, and get deals done.
But if you’re consistent, smart, and build relationships — the earnings can scale fast.
Questions to ask yourself:
-
How many players can you realistically manage at once?
-
Are you focused on youth, semi-pro, or elite players?
-
Can you find a niche market other agents ignore?
-
Are you doing the admin, legal, and business side properly?
This isn’t a job where money is handed out. You earn it when your player signs.
